    Meet Our Founding Family!

Dr. Andrew Cai’s father, Sau Cai, a Vietnamese refugee, founded Pho Pasteur® to support his family after being laid off from his engineering job. Along with his wife, Lan, they opened their first restaurant in 1991 in Boston, Massachusetts, and expanded with a second location in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 2017. When young Dr. Cai was helping his father lay bricks for the outer wall of their restaurant, Sau held a brick in his hand and said “Son, one day this brick will feed our family.”

For 30 years, the Cai family built their restaurant, “brick-by-brick”, from an eight table hole in the wall restaurant in the “Combat Zone” of Boston to a thirty-six table restaurant Boston staple. Dr. Cai and his brothers worked in the restaurant since childhood as Sau was raising them to understand that you need to learn to earn everything yourself. Their mission was to treat their employees and guests like family while serving a variety of traditional noodle soups, rice plates, and other authentic dishes.

They always believed in serving the freshest cuts of meats and vegetables and took great pride in offering a great selection of vegetarian and gluten-free dishes. Along with a reputation for its delicious food and big portions, Pho Pasteur® is also known for fast-paced service and lively ambiance. The food takes only a few minutes to be served and is enjoyed in a full-service dining setting.

When Sau decided to retire after a health scare, Dr. Cai and his wife, Clara, a Korean-American immigrant, author, hospitality major and established top business management consultant for multiple Fortune 50 companies, recognized that his father had achieved the American Dream of starting as a refugee and becoming a successful businessman. They also viewed the restaurant not only as a major part of the Boston community but also as a symbol of the American Dream for their family and others. Indeed, the success of the restaurant supported all the brothers to become doctors and gave Dr. Cai’s parents' a comfortable retirement with passive income. With their foundation and passion to help others, Dr. Cai and Clara decided to pivot their careers and franchise Pho Pasteur to give other Americans the dream their family received.

What Guests Love About Pho Pasteur®

"This is my absolutely favorite pho place-ever. I’m from out of town and nothing compares, except for MAYBE pho in Asia. I’ve come to Boston a few times for family vacation and each time I make a point to go back here at least once and it is always so so good. Friendly people, amazing food, great flavor and honestly worth the trip to Boston alone. I never write yelp reviews, but these people deserve it. If you needed a sign to check this place out, this is it … GO! "

    M.W. – Tempe, AZ

"Love this place. Pho is best in Boston & Vermicelli noodle salad with shrimp, pork and egg roll is amazing. 10/10 would recommend this place."

    T.W. – San Francisco, CA

"We’ve been going to Pho Pasteur since the 1990s, and it is still the gold standard for Pho. The broth is intense and ethereal, rich with star anise. The noodles are a perfect al dente. The pho Tai, Nam, Gan, Sach (rare steak, well-done flank, tendon, and tripe) is superb. The tripe is delicate and crunchy, and the rare steak is just right. Order the small Pho size, which should satisfy most appetites. The price is right. We’ve had Pho all over the US, and this is one of the best in the nation. Conveniently open seven days weekly."
